Well,
I'm not sure if you've heard about the scandal with a batch of
Lululemon Yoga Pants being see-through, but it is all over the yoga
gossip channels. It's caused quite a stir amongst many yogis, but you
know what I say...
"Who cares?"
Don't
get me wrong, I've heard that usually they are very lovely, durable
yoga pants, but I have better things to spend $120 on. I buy mine for
about $19.99 at TJ Maxx and they last me for years. Now I'm certainly
not judging anyone on what they spend their money on - have at it. But
it just makes me wonder what has become of us when this is the biggest
news amongst the yogic circuits?
With
the continued "popularity" of yoga comes the commercialism of the
practice. It's an inevitable element in our culture when something does
well. I wonder in our (our society's) quest for making a buck, if we
aren't pushing more people away from a practice that is so purely
intended, and that offers such a tremendous healing benefit for anyone,
by concentrating on such incidental things like this?
I
teach yoga because I truly believe in it. I am a first-hand account of
how yoga can change someone's life for the better. I may not be able to
do a handstand, I may not look like the models on the cover of Yoga Journal,
and I certainly have days where I do not feel very "yogic," but I truly
believe in the practice. I tell people that want to do yoga teacher
training for monetary reasons to reconsider. And in seven years I have
not increased our rates. Yes, yoga is a business. But, dare I say, that
more need to get back to teaching and learning about this practice and
spend less time on looking the part?
Squat in your yard and do whatever poses come naturally to you.
Yoga is a natural state of being, so be natural. And if you do come to class in your Lululemon yoga pants, I promise to only check out your Asana - not your...well, you get it...
Tracey,
ReplyDeleteI have been coming to yoga for about 2 months and it has helped me in my "Mid Life" whatever you call this, so very much! I feel alive again, feel stronger and most of all am able to find a calm I need so much. I thank you for being such a genuine person and for your whole staff. Everyone I have come in contact with has been so helpful and friendly. Yoga is my new friend. Maureen
Thank you, Maureen. It is comments like yours that remind me why I do what I do. Much love. Namaste.
