June Newsletter: "Solstice Blessings"

Dear friends of One Yoga Center,

Summer Solstice is the highest energized time of year. Do you feel it? The sun is shining longer everyday, the temperature is warming up (well, let's not count Memorial Weekend), and our lives are moving in a positive, sunny direction. Not everything may feel strong and well in the world, but there is a serious push towards magnifying the positive energies and this is something that you can easily grab onto this time of year.

The Summer Solstice is the longest day of the year and occurs on June 20/21st in the Northern hemisphere. Our friends down under will be celebrating the Winter Solstice, or longest night of the year while we enjoy the former. Summertime brings with it a more carefree feeling often brought in with vacations, cookouts, and numerous family and friend gatherings outside. What are you cooking up for the solstice this year?

There is a long-time yoga tradition of performing 108 Sun Salutations for the Summer Solstice. 108 is an auspicious number, and launching into 108 Surya Namaskars is some serious business where we can create a lot of solar energy and direct it to a higher positive intention. You can join me on a friend's farm in Robbinsville where peacocks roam and flowers bloom for this solstice practice on Sunday June 20th at 11 am. There are many forms of Surya Namaskar - the easiest being a simple arm gesture to the sun we like to call "Making the Sun." With several other salutations to choose from, you will be guided though the 108 where you can move to whatever form or ability that you want to. We will be creating a collective continued healing energy for MaMa Earth together, but you can bring any other healing intentions that you want. To join us, email Info@OneYogaCenter.net for the address. The event is $25 pp and you can register right with the button link at the top of this message!

Summer Practices

Summertime may come with a plethora of energy, but be careful not to burn out. Once the weather turns hot and dry, it is easy to dehydrate, and that can come with a myriad of issues that you may not even contribute to dehydration at first. So the element of water is your friend during the summertime. If you heat up your yoga practices, make sure to drink plenty of water afterwards. Everyday you may want to up your overall water intake in general, but especially if you are going to be outside in the heat.

Water sports, aqua yoga, floating, swimming and even bathing are other water practices that you can enjoy to cool down the system. Our yogic tongue breathing, Sithali and Sitkari, are also excellent methods of cooling down the body during the summer. They even help quench hunger pains during fasting.

Summertime can be an energizing time of year or regenerative depending on what you personally need. So assess if you need more energy and stamina and plug into Father Sun more, or if you need more restorative and rejuvenation and dive into the Moon Goddess. There are many solar and lunar practices in the yoga tradition that we will explore in our classes throughout June as well, so make sure to jump into some of our live classes either on zoom or in the studio - or subscribe to The Vault, where many of the classes will be uploaded for your viewing and practicing at any time day or night.

However you celebrate the solstice, I'm sending you waves and waves of blessings for continued healing and well-being in every facet of your life.

Dr. Tracey
